What is Amateur Radio?
Amateur Radio is a unique and fascinating hobby that captivates the interest of millions of people around the world.
It encompasses a huge range of activities, including communication with other enthusiasts in the local area, building and maintenance of radio equipment, using amateur satellites to relay messages over huge distances, and using short-wave radio to communicate worldwide, often with no more transmitted power than that of a domestic light bulb.
Many Radio Amateurs are operating at the cutting edge of technology and some have been responsible for the communications developments that we now all take for granted.
Amateur radio can be enjoyed by people of all ages, all of whom can make friends around the world, from their own home.

Club Callsigns
The Club holds the callsign G3RCM (reissued to the club in 2003) which is used for regular operation from the club premises.
The club also holds the contest call M3M and the callsign of co founder,Howard Booth G2AS who became VK2AMD from 1948 to 2008 when he became a Silent Key at the age of 100 years! Howard is pictured (above right) when he was 95 years old. These callsigns are used for club contest activities.
Club members are encouraged to use club callsigns for appropriate events and contests that promote Sheffield Amateur Radio Club away from club premises. This can be arranged by discussing this with the club chairperson and the NOV holder,to ensure that the callsign is available for the proposed activity. All logs are to be sent to the club QSL manager (in ADIF format) as we consider it very important that we are able to reply to QSL card requests from other radio amateurs.
