Silent keys at Christmas

I’m very saddened to record the deaths of two local amateurs over the recent few days;G0JMU and G4DUP

Harry,G0JMU (7Q7HB),of Laughton-en-le Morthen, died a few days ago shortly after returning to our area after some months in Malawi (7Q7).

7Q7HB (G0JMU) fixing some equipment in his Malawi radio shack

Harry was a good friend of his neighbour Reggie Green, one of our club members. Every year,he spent several months at Club Makakola on the shores of Lake Malawi. This is a tourist hotel complex and Harry went down there every year to keep the place running, fixing the generators and other plant which inevitably . . . →Read More:Silent keys at Christmas

Echolink –is it REAL radio?

In presenting Echolink and IRLP as technologies of amateur radio,as something which is a part of the advancement of  the hobby,it is useful to have a better understanding of what it actually is,and to also open the discussion as to why Radio Amateurs should use it.

Both Echolink and IRLP are systems that use voice over internet protocols  (VOIP). They were actually here with us in use at least for the last ten years and well before the onset of programs such as Skype and ovoo. It is important to appreciate that Echolink and IRLP are in essence, innovative advancements in  amateur radio. D-Star . . . →Read More:Echolink –is it REAL radio?

SARC QSL CARD COMPETITION

images

The club meeting on Monday 9th January is a new event, the SARC QSL Competition. The rules are simple…. just bring along your QSL card (or a design for one you are going to print) and display it on the pin board provided at the club. A couple of judges will then take a look and make a judgement on who is the winner and runner up. Certificates will be awarded to both successful exhibitors.

The QSL MUST be your own personal one,not one you have received from a station worked on the amateur radio bands :-)

If you don’t yet have a QSL card why not try the software at: http://www.va3hj.ca/

Congratulations !

Congratulations to our newest FL licensee passes,Adam Jones M6BGJ and Lewis Allcock M6LSA,both of whom took the exam at the club HQ just a weekend and a half ago. It’s good to see more young people take up Amateur Radio as its continued existence will depend on them, long after the rest of us Old Timers have gone to the “Big Dxpedition in the Sky”! Adam is in his 20s while Lewis is 14 years old.

The club wishes both these new radio amateurs many years of enjoyment in what must be the world’s greatest hobby. Do give them a call when you hear them on the air.

TVI at the Club …cured!

David,M0EQD and myself spent this morning at the club HQ and finally got rid of the TVI problem that has prevented us from using the shack for over a year. In the end it turned out to be an old terrestrial antenna that was still plugged into the Sports Club DVD player and then looped into the Sky box. We tried filters on all coax leads at first and reduced the TVI a little but not enough to satisfy us. Taking out the TV antenna downlead solved the problem as it was the culprit that was picking up our RF and carrying it down to the Sky Box a couple of hundred feet away. The TV antenna is not . . . →Read More:TVI at the Club …cured!

SARC enters G2AS/P in RSGB SSB Field Day:3-4 September 2011

M0GAV operates G2AS/P in SSB FD Sept 2011

Those of you who did not manage to get to SARC’s SSB field day station last weekend missed a really good time. In spite of being short of 4 operators and having a generator failure just 7 minutes before the start of the contest (!),we managed 203,184 points (including 102 DXCC multipliers) from 452 QSOs. This is over twice last year’s score from the same location and should put us in the top ten! We had only four experienced contesters on hand (G0HSA,G3PHO,M0GAV on HF and G8EQD on VHF) …not . . . →Read More:SARC enters G2AS/P in RSGB SSB Field Day:3-4 September 2011

SARC HELPS MAJOR DXPEDITION

Kirimati (Christmas Island) in the Central Pacific

SARC members were kind enough to support CDXC in their efforts to raise money for the forthcomingT32C DXpedition to East Kiribati by making individual purchases of raffle tickets through the club secretary (himself a member of CDXC) and the club as a body purchasing some 20 tickets, all in the hope of winning the excellent FT950 transceiver prize!  However, with some 4000 tickets sold in total, anyone’s chances were sure to be much less than it raining on Field Day!  At the foot of this post is the result of the draw made . . . →Read More:SARC HELPS MAJOR DXPEDITION

SARC finish in top 25% of Clubs in 2011 RSGB 80m Club Contest series

The results of the RSGB 80m CC 2011 have just been announced and SARC have finished 22nd out of some 91 clubs in the final league table. This is a particularly good effort as the numbers of SARC members taking part this year was considerably down on previous years, the bulk of the points being scored by the “regulars”G0HSA,G3PHO,G4FAL,M0GAV and M0JMO. Mention must be made of G6DCT who, with low power and a simple antenna did some sterling work in the datamodes section. The full results table can be found at: http://www.rsgbcc.org/hf/results/2011/80mcc2011.shtml

This cumulative contest takes place each month from January to July on the first Monday, second Wednesday and the third Thursday of each month. . . . →Read More:SARC finish in top 25% of Clubs in 2011 RSGB 80m Club Contest series

A Note of Thanks

Hi to all …  I am pleased to see a lot of positive things going on at our web site, from  people /members putting up projects that  they would like to get involved in.  It would be nice to see more things like this happen within the club. As the Chairman of SARC,with the rest of  the  Committee,we are here to help “You the  members”to move the Club in the Direction you would like to see the Club go.  If it were not for you ( the Members ) then there would be no Club.  I can see this being a good move forward . . . →Read More:A Note of Thanks
