Hi to all our Members. If you would like to take your Intermediate Licence, SARC will be running a course starting in February. All you need to do is see Carol (2E0CJH ), our membership security on the door and put your name on the list so that we can see the people that would like to attend the course. This will also be announced at the Club next Monday night by your Chairman.

Website changes

After many months, we are finally making preparations to move the club’s website to a new host that will manage our domain offering the club very good value for money.

The website has been hosted under a club member’s domain in the past year for free, and who has been helpful in providing the club with an up to date website.

This might mean the SARC website going offline for a day or so at the most but it will be back under it’s proper domain. Krystyna M6KSH will be working very hard over the weekend against the clock to ensure the minimum of disruption.

Just to remind you of next Monday’s (16th January 2012) talk at the club…. Nick Totterdell, G4FAL (and a member of SARC) will be giving an illustrated talk on the world record breaking DXpedition to East Kiribati (Christmas island) which took place last October. Nick was a member of the 40 strong team and has kindly offered to give this talk to our club.

Vision for SARC

Here we have a ideal club house this is our vision for 2012. We have all the Help from local companies and we are working with our local Kier Group to try to find a suitable site for our Club. so we can build something like this, or a suitable building for the Club, When we find a site!! we need all our members to pull together and make this Happen, As i think this would the right move for SARC to invest in some thing like this , move would help the Club Grow and give our members some thing to be proud of,

Silent keys at Christmas

I’m very saddened to record the deaths of two local amateurs over the recent few days; G0JMU and G4DUP

Harry, G0JMU (7Q7HB), of Laughton-en-le Morthen, died a few days ago shortly after returning to our area after some months in Malawi (7Q7).

Harry was a good friend of his neighbour Reggie Green, one of our club members. Every year, he spent several months at Club Makakola on the shores of Lake Malawi. Echolink – is it REAL radio?

In presenting Echolink and IRLP as technologies of amateur radio, as something which is a part of the advancement of the hobby, it is useful to have a better understanding of what it actually is, and to also open the discussion as to why Radio Amateurs should use it.

Both Echolink and IRLP are systems that use voice over internet protocols (VOIP). They were actually here with us in use at least for the last ten years and well before the onset of programs such as Skype and ovoo. SARC QSL CARD COMPETITION

The club meeting on Monday 9th January is a new event, the SARC QSL Competition. The rules are simple…. just bring along your QSL card (or a design for one you are going to print) and display it on the pin board provided at the club. A couple of judges will then take a look and make a judgement on who is the winner and runner up. Certificates will be awarded to both successful exhibitors.

The QSL MUST be your own personal one, not one you have received from a station worked on the amateur radio bands

Congratulations to our newest FL licensee passes, Adam Jones M6BGJ and Lewis Allcock M6LSA, both of whom took the exam at the club HQ just a weekend and a half ago. It’s good to see more young people take up Amateur Radio as its continued existence will depend on them, long after the rest of us Old Timers have gone to the “Big Dxpedition in the Sky”! Adam is in his 20s while Lewis is 14 years old.

The club wishes both these new radio amateurs many years of enjoyment in what must be the world’s greatest hobby. Do give them a call when you hear them on the air.

TVI at the Club … cured!

David, M0EQD and myself spent this morning at the club HQ and finally got rid of the TVI problem that has prevented us from using the shack for over a year. In the end it turned out to be an old terrestrial antenna that was still plugged into the Sports Club DVD player and then looped into the Sky box. We tried filters on all coax leads at first and reduced the TVI a little but not enough to satisfy us. Taking out the TV antenna downlead solved the problem as it was the culprit that was picking up our RF and carrying it down to the Sky Box a couple of hundred feet away. SSB Field Day Results

SARC entered the RSGB SSB Field Day in early September this year and set up a 100 watt + single wire antenna (windom) station for the Restricted Section. The results are now published and we have done very well considering the lack of experienced operators and helpers over the weekend. We finished 10th out of 30 entries, doubling our score from last year. The results can be found at:

LATE FLASH! I’ve just compared the adjudicated score with our actual entry. We claimed 450 scoring contacts with 102 multipliers for 203,184 points. Just a reminder that next Monday evening, Oct 17th, is the evening when some of our members receive trophies and certificates for their efforts in the past club year. The list may include you! Please come along and enjoy the evening. Free food (sandwiches and other tasty goodies) will be available from around 9pm and the Sports Club bar will the open for any drinks you might like to purchase.Hopefully, as with last year, we may have a short video or slide show of club events.

Proposals for 11 Metre AM/SSB

There is a lot of talk within the club about use of SSB and AM becoming legal on 11 metres, with some club members beleiving the band is already legal for use from October 2011. This is not correct information…!!

I have discussed this with ofcom on the telephone who have clarified that these are ‘Proposals’. The proposals were agreed at an ECC meeting that took place in June 2010; the report from that meeting can be accessed by clicking here
